By factoring in new types of plant growth facilities, such information could help future astronauts grow plants on the lunar surface and even on Mars. This research should also look at methods of delivering water and sunlight to plants to enable their growth while away from the Earth's surface. Plants in space: Plants could be used as part of a natural life support system for humans in space, and as part of this, NASA scientists must investigate how plants grow in space environments under microgravity. This means studying factors such as duration of spaceflight, radiation exposure levels, and even behavioral aspects arising from living in confined and highly controlled spaces. Human and Animal Biology: The survey stresses the need for NASA to identify the effects of space on individual aspects of biological systems and how alterations in cardiovascular, muscle, bone, vestibular, vision, brain and other organ systems are reflected over the whole body and down to a genetic level. This includes looking at how humans, plants, animals and microbes will interact in space - either purposefully or unintentionally. The biological aspects focused on in the survey include:īiological Sciences in Space and Planetary Environments: Scientists with NASA's biological programs must identify the health risks presented to humans and other biological systems by space environments, according to the decadal survey. These are spread over three broad research areas covered by NASA's BPS division and the space agency's Human Research Program (HRP) and emphasize the overlap between physical and biological phenomena. The paper identifies 11 key scientific questions that must be answered over the coming decade in order for NASA to safely explore space and to conduct vital research only possible in low-gravity environments. If you are visiting or staying in Columbus, the downtown segment is definitely worth checking out.11 key areas needed to ensure space success over the next decade Maybe 10% of people brought dogs as well. We saw mostly foot traffic, with the occasional cyclists and whatever you call those mono-wheel electric skateboard things (plus some normal skateboards). There appeared to be one or more hotels on that side, so it provides convenient access for people staying over there to access busier areas. There is a connection to a pedestrian bridge over to the west bank of the river. This part passes college campuses and businesses, but there is not much commercial along here (like restaurants, etc.). Our hotel adjoined the Riverwalk also, so we earlier explored it a bit from that point (maybe a mile north of downtown) heading south (maybe 3/4 of a mile). All this is within the two or three hundred yard stretch just west of the heart of downtown. Some people set up there with cameras to get action shots, in fact. There is even a short bridge out to a small island for the best viewing. The downtown section is the most interesting (that we saw) as it showcases the river rapids and you can watch people in kayaks and rafts navigating them. At other points, it is on the same level with streets / parking. At that point, though, the path is about 2 stories below street level, so be prepared for stairs. There are parking garages within a few blocks of it, so it is an easy walk. You can access this from a number of streets / businesses downtown. The part we explored during our trip was the segment nearest to downtown and a segment a bit north of there. This one apparently dates from the early 90s. A number of communities have built some variant of a Riverwalk in the last 20 / 50 years.
